Gainesville woman among growing number of boomers starting their own online businesses

New Year’s Eve Day, a popular radio station in Gainesville, GA (where I live) called me on the phone to see about interviewing me.  They had read about me in an article in the Charlotte (NC) Observer …….. The article is by  Reporter Katie Highsmith.

GAINESVILLE - When a Gainesville woman lost her job, she found a way to work anytime she wants, anywhere she wants, and any way she wants.Nancy Fahey started an online business. And, she is not alone among baby boomers, especially, who suddenly find themselves out of a job.She told AccessNorthGa.com recently she knew she had to do something drastic when she lost her job six years ago at age 56.

“I came home and I told my husband that I didn’t want to work for anyone again,” she said.

So she started the Professional Support Network - an online business that provides customer support for online marketers.

Unlike many of her peers, Fahey said she didn’t let the Internet intimidate her.

“I wasn’t afraid of it,” she said. “I think a lot of older people think ‘I can’t do this!’”

Fahey says having a business online has been extremely beneficial.

“If I want to lay down for an hour or two in the afternoon, maybe watch television, maybe doze, I can do it,” she said.

Fahey said working online reduces the overhead she would have with a brick-and-mortar business. She also saves money on work clothes and gas, and if she ever wants to go on vacation, all she has to do is pack her laptop.

The AARP has found that as many as 80 percent of baby boomers plan to keep working fulltime after they reach retirement age or at least work part-time, many of them, like Fahey, by starting their own business… and in many cases an Internet business.

AARP recently held a four-month contest titled “My Dream Job,” aimed at people 50-years-old and older and inviting them to participate by writing an essay on the kind of job they would like to have in their retirement years. The winners will be announced later this month, according to the AARP Web site.
